Latkepalooza 2010

I’m a shameless thief.  I stole the name of our upcoming Chanukah Party (Saturday Dec 4, 9 pm) from Arnie and Rita.

Its actually a pretty funny story.  Two years ago Rita and Arnie ordered some hot briskets from me while I was still at the Monarch.  I dropped it off and it felt like we became friends in our first conversation.  I think they felt the same way because they invited me to attend “Latkepalooza” their Chanukah Party that evening and I happily agreed.

I don’t know about you but it could be a little awkward attending a party where you don’t know anyone.  In fact Rachel and I attended together and we had the best time.  Arnie and Rita’s friends and family continue to frequent the deli weekly and they’ve had all kinds of gatherings with us.

In September when we did “Battle if the Bubbies, Matzoh Ball Smackdown” Rita and Arnie tabulated the judges votes for us.  It was such a crazy and chaotic day that I hadn’t thought this job through. When I turned around with the score cards in my hand the charming duo needed no convincing to bail me out of my jam.  Better yet, when I mentioned that Chapter Two of the Battle would be a latke competition, they didn’t hesitate to give me permission to use Latkepalooza.

I think this time we’ll use a different format and ask latke-makers to bring a few dozen samples and maybe even have a separate apple sauce category (Michelle’s idea).  Instead of having celebrity judges we’ll let the party-goers decide which ones they like best.  Of course, I expect Rita and Arnie to enter the competition so they won’t be counting votes but other competitors beware: these guys make wicked latkes so bring your best.

For logistical reasons we ask you to bring your best potato pancakes and we’ll warm them in the ovens for you. It should be an awesome party!

I was wondering when your Gefilte fish competition is taking place? I missed your first 2 competitions and look forward to this one.

    Hi Steph,

We’re going to do the Gefilte Fish Derby on Saturday April 16 at 4pm. Two categories: sweet and pepper. Celebrity judges. It’ll be a riot.
