Naming Names

In a previous life, when I managed political campaigns for love and money, I used to implore candidates not to mention anyone except their spouses in their victory (or defeat) speeches.  I learned first hand how painful it feels to be left out of the list of “thank yous”.  It happened more than once.

In this context, I’ve thought a lot about my previous post.  I didn’t mean to imply that Paul was our only superstar. Of course I stand by what I posted but I want everyone who works at Caplansky’s to know that we are all superstars in our own way.  It may be easy or convenient to highlite the contribution of an outgoing team member like Paul but that doesn’t denigrate or diminish the contribution that we all make.

From time to time I may mention someone who does something exceptional or funny or interesting but I’ll do my best to resist playing favourites in this blog or in the deli.

My nephew,Michael Bobbi gobbled down your superb smoked meat sandwich, fries, pickles,as for the deserts what can I say but WOW! We continue to be in heaven,Zane at going back to a magical deli like yours. Who knows what goodies we’ll feast on this Saturday?? We’re still talking about that great treat of a lunch yesterday. Even my cousin Bonnie, from North Carolina, (who has some food restrictions) really loved your smoked fatty meat sandwich on your amazing old fashioned rye. We all,of course, devoured your pickles (dills, etc) fries (the fries “Sing”) I thought you,Zane were the perfect host, you and your wonderful,super-friendly,warm-hearted staff, waitresses, etc made us feel as if we were all visiting the home of a special friend, for that is what you are to all of us Bernsteins. You out did yourself,Zane with the rich, superlative lovely spiced fatty smoked meat sandwich on your superb rye. Not even Yitzes comes close,as good as they are,nor Schwartzes in Montreal (my place of choice when I visit my cousins there, along with “Beauty”. Those magical desserts are so rich,so wonderful,so truly light, yet a beautiful conclusion to a perfect meal. Zane, you are not only a mench, in my book, you are a real pro and a true-blue friend. Bless you, Zane, for bringing back something I have long missed in Toronto. I’m going to make you a tape of some more 78s (Yiddish) Klezmer music/bands from before 1925, featuring Al Jolson. All from my collection of 45,000 78s. I’ll bring it with me this week, when I come for supper or lunch.
