Thanks Arnie. I know how you and Rita feel about the Monarch and I wish I could say I'm moving just for you but that wouldn't be completely true (and I'm a stickler for the truth). On the other hand, your brother has been in a bunch of times and he represents you well. I know I'll see the rest of you at 356 College.

Hey Zane! A bit late with this post; I hope you read it. Let me first congratulate you on a magnificent, meteoric year. (Or is that
"meat-eoric"?) You and your brisket were the hit of our Chanukah party, and if I squint just right, I can induce a sense memory of your fabulous smoked meat. It's true that we haven't been back to the Monarch, but that's because we want to enjoy the whole package, including venue. I'm not going to rag on about the Monarch. I fully understand why many have a great deal of affection for the place. And I commend you for a brilliant initial business plan, born of necessity. But clearly you are now making the right move, and we CANNOT WAIT to be there! Mazel Tov again. We hope to see you soon.

From California to Caplansky's, you are missed my dear cousin. From all the great reports (and articles, and reviews, and blog responses, and...), I feel like I've been there myself. Alas, I look forward to the day I can poke my head back in the kitchen and surprise you with a real life hug, and maybe just maybe, sample a bite of your famous tastings (it would be my first meat in over 10 years!! THAT'S how much I love you).

To those who don't know, not only is it Caplansky's birthday, but it's also Zane's!! Happy (early) Birthday cousin - hope it's as great as your last year has been.

With love,
David (& Traci)

i remember that day showing up to caps and it was packed. i had brought my goyim girlfriend who had never tried the smoked meat before. I was raving about you kid. when i arrived it was packed. what happened? i thought to myself? it took 20 minutes to be seated and their were no forks! i was at first a bit offended because it was until then the joint that i loved to tell people about and now everyone knows. yes i was happy for you but it was like i was being cheated on and like everyone knows about a partner who decides to have an open relationship with you and starts sleeping with others against your better judgment, it does take some time getting used to (am i the only one who has experienced this?) but eventually you get used to it and remain grateful for even getting a turn... anyway as you so boldly admitted, that day your meat sucked adding insult to injury. my girlfriend didnt know what I was raving about. but luckily you mentioned the issuein your blog and it saved my impression of you (as i mentioned in your blog back then) (i didn't know about smoking meat and that the problem was you didn't have enough time to smoke the meat because you ran out of the first batch)

well ever since then and before then, your meat has been perfect I have enjoyed many sandwiches, shared them with my family and friends, and nothing better than arriving and seeing you, my new friend and meat smoker (everyone needs a meat smoking friend in their life). You make everyone feel a part of the family and that's what makes caps such a great place to dine.

And even though my dr. told me to stay away from this kind of food (how can i pass up poutine fries smothered with smoked meat?) I still find the right times to enjoy the best food I have ever eaten. i pay for it but its well worth the price.

The monarch will be missed. you have created a community where everyone loves to visit and that is a great mitzvah.

Zane, mazel tov on your success and what you have brought to Toronto. It is very exciting to tell people about you "what? you haven't heard of caplansky's?" and to see people's eyes brighten at the explanation of the pleasure received from every bite. if my dead were still alive they would be part of your feeding family too.

I look forward to being at your new home on College.

Mazels, my deli friend, mazels.

Well done Zane.

I've heard and experienced some of that same pain (and some of it with you!!), and have enjoyed reading about your ongoing success. But hey - if to experience pain is life, so is taking calculated risks, whether it be opening a deli or jumping out of a plane. Sorry I missed one of those, but some day I'll get down there for a sandwich myself. In the meantime, congratulations and know that you're in my thoughts. Come out for a visit when you have a chance.

cheers,
chris

Well, Zane, now I can tell my parents why you weren't around last night. Looks like we came a day too late!

You know you've got my full support and that I'm really looking forward to the new location. Jerry told my dad he insured the new place (so another step climbed), but dad doesn't understand why you're moving. I tried to explain it, but he was too busy enjoying the soup. Go figure!

Mazel tov for lasting a year in that hectic environment. It takes a dedicated person to live through it; and your customers are better for it.

I remember opening day very well. It was HECTIC to say the least.

I had dinner with my family that week. We were talking about the success - the news reports, the hype and the word-of-mouth.

My sister commented that if Caplansky's were to become a long-lasting staple Toronto restaurant, when I am old, I will go with my family and inform them for the hundredth time - "I was there on opening day - I was the first waitress at this Deli. At the time, the pop's cost one dollar..."

Congrats Zane.

PS - Megan is a saint.
